Ron Artis II returns to Hawaiʻi to mentor young musicians
Grammy-circuit musician Ron Artis II is coming home to Oʻahu this weekend to give local kids free music lessons — a feel-good community story.
- Ron Artis II, a Songwriters Hall of Fame honoree, is holding a free workshop and concert Saturday at the Kailua Music School.
- He has toured 30 countries and played with Joan Baez, Jack Johnson, John Oates, Slash, and Tom Morello, and wants to pass that experience to the next generation.
- The day starts with a short performance, then splits into groups for drums, bass, and guitar/singing/songwriting, led by Artis and friends including a bassist flying in from Portland.
- It is open to all ages and skill levels through college, and is completely free, run through his member-supported "Made of Love Ohana" nonprofit.
- The theme is "love through action," inspired by mentors like singer John Cruz who told him to hold the door open for others.
Outlook: Space is limited, so anyone interested should contact the Kailua Music School soon to grab a slot before the weekend.
