Uganda demands Taiwanese travelers use Chinese passports for entry stamps

Aug 18, 2026

Uganda is forcing Taiwanese visitors to show a Chinese passport before it will return their Taiwan passport, a move seen as Beijing's pressure reaching into a third country's border control.

  • Airport officers in Kampala held the passports of three Taiwanese businesspeople and family members, releasing them only after the travelers got an entry stamp in a Chinese passport.
  • Officials called it enforcement of Uganda's "one China" policy; two earlier travelers were also held, and one was sent back.
  • The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China called it forced discrimination and said Uganda is carrying out Beijing's political demands at its own border.
  • Refusing valid Taiwan passports breaks basic non-discrimination rules for international air travel.
  • Taiwan's foreign ministry thanked the alliance and urged Uganda to drop the restriction before it damages normal ties.

Outlook: Expect more diplomatic pressure on Uganda, but little sign Beijing will ease the campaign to squeeze Taiwan's travel documents out of use abroad.
