Hawaiʻi youth tech program to help save the ʻalalā

Aug 19, 2026

Two free community events are coming to Hawaiʻi, one pairing young coders with a native bird conservation effort and another opening up military aircraft to the public.

  • Hilo-area youth ages 14 to 26 can join a free two-day tech and conservation workshop in early September at Kaulu Hub at Prince Kūhiō Plaza.
  • Participants will learn app design and AI coding tools, then build a prototype to monitor feeding stations for the ʻalalā, the Hawaiian crow being returned to the wild.
  • Space is limited and registration closes at the end of August.
  • Pacific Air Forces will host Wings of Aloha at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in mid-September, with aircraft displays and a chance to meet the crews, open to all ages and free to attend.
  • Native Hawaiian stunt coordinator Craig Davidson and his team are running stunt classes for local kids with the nonprofit Ho'ōla Mana, teaching safe falls and wire work to build confidence.

Outlook: Both events are open for sign-ups now, with the youth tech workshop filling first because of limited seats.
