Three dead in three-car pileup on Taiwan's National Highway 1
A chain-reaction crash on Taiwan's National Highway 1 near Sanyi has killed three people, after a woman who had stepped out of her car was hit in a second collision.
- A rental van heading to Taoyuan Airport rear-ended a Tesla in the inside lane on Wednesday morning.
- Both drivers got out and stood between the two cars to talk — then a third car slammed into the van, pushing it into them.
- The van driver and a Filipino passenger died at the scene; the Tesla's driver died early Thursday after doctors briefly revived her.
- Three others were hurt but are conscious and out of danger, including a teenage passenger in the Tesla.
- The third driver tested negative for alcohol, and prosecutors are still working out who was at fault.
Outlook: Investigators will determine responsibility after the coroner's report, and the case is a reminder that standing on a live highway after a minor crash is often deadlier than the crash itself.
