Taiwan legislator Chen Chao-ming cleared of corruption charges on appeal

Taiwan's High Court overturned corruption convictions for two lawmakers, a win for the defendants but another blow to a bribery case that has dragged on for years.

  • Independent legislator Chen Chao-ming and former legislator Hsu Yung-ming were both found not guilty on appeal.
  • Two other former lawmakers, Su Chen-ching and Liao Kuo-tung, lost their appeals and keep prison terms of 10 years and 8.5 years.
  • Chen called the ruling justice delayed, saying the case has ground on for close to six years since his detention.
  • He was re-elected in Miaoli despite the charges, the first Taiwanese lawmaker to win office while facing a case under the anti-corruption law.

Outlook: The verdicts can still be appealed, so the case is likely headed to Taiwan's Supreme Court.
