Magnitude 5.1 earthquake shakes northeastern Taiwan
A moderate quake hit off Taiwan's northeast coast Saturday morning with no damage or injuries reported — a routine event for an island used to seismic activity.
- The quake struck at sea southeast of Yilan County, at a fairly deep 28 km.
- Shaking was strongest in Yilan and Hualien counties, but only a 3 on Taiwan's 7-step scale.
- Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung and several other areas felt light shaking.
- No damage or injuries were reported right away.
Outlook: Aftershocks are possible, but a quake this size at this depth rarely causes lasting problems.
