Cho Jung-tai: The government has multiple projects in Taichung, but no relocation of any agency has been discussed

Aug 23, 2026

Taiwan's Premier Cho Jung-tai has again denied that the Executive Yuan and the Legislative Yuan will move to Taichung, tempering expectations in the city, while stressing that several construction projects are still planned for central Taiwan.

  • Cho stated clearly that President Lai Ching-te "does not have this dream," and that the government is not currently discussing the relocation of any central government agency.
  • The talk of relocating the Executive Yuan stemmed from an old proposal raised by someone at an event, and was merely a response in the course of that conversation.
  • The government's push for a "balanced Taiwan" focuses on Zhongxing New Village, Taichung Airport and industrial development.
  • Central Taiwan's development is targeted at precision and smart industries, optics, smart agriculture and science parks.

Outlook: The relocation issue will see no progress in the short term, and the government will keep its focus on industrial and infrastructure investment in Taichung.
