Pingtung county suspends work and classes in 14 areas as floodwater lingers
Flooding still hasn't drained in parts of southern Taiwan, so Pingtung County has called off work and school for Aug. 25 in more than a dozen communities — disruptive for residents, but a sign officials are treating the water as still dangerous.
- Standing water in Wanhua village, Nanzhou township, has not receded, so it was added to the closure list late in the day.
- Eight mountain indigenous townships are shut, including Wutai, Sandimen, Majia and Mudan.
- Six villages in low-lying coastal towns — Donggang, Fangliao, Jiadong and Nanzhou — are also closed.
- Everywhere else in Pingtung stays on a normal schedule.
Outlook: More areas could be added if the water doesn't drain, and closures should lift as soon as it does.
