Canada matches US tariffs dollar for dollar

Aug 25, 2026

Canada is hitting back at US tariffs with matching duties on hundreds of American products, bad news for workers and shoppers on both sides of the border.

  • Starting September 8, Canada puts counter-tariffs of up to 50% on roughly $27.6 billion of US goods, matching each American tariff rate.
  • The list runs to about 700 items — steel, aluminum, furniture, appliances, dairy, fish, plywood, motorcycles, industrial robots, even golf clubs and cosmetics.
  • Americans get hit too: car prices could rise thousands of dollars, and the auto sector faces layoffs on both sides.
  • Canada is holding back its bigger weapons — cutting off energy exports and selling off its large pile of US government debt, which would raise US borrowing costs.
  • Canada is also courting other trading partners, including China, so it never depends on one country again.

Outlook: Expect more escalation and consumer boycotts unless both sides cut a deal, with roughly 90,000 Canadian jobs and US auto work on the line.
