Aug 24, 2026

Hsinchu City has retimed the traffic lights along Minghu Road, welcome news for the commuters who travel to and from the Hsinchu Science Park each day.

  • Signal timing has been comprehensively reset at 34 intersections on Minghu Road and in the surrounding area, covering a stretch from Nanda Road and Shipin Road all the way to Huanbei Road at the Hsinchu County line.
  • The city government estimates that southbound commuting times can be cut by about 17% and northbound times by about 11%.
  • Six intersections that frequently congest will be fitted with smart adaptive signals, which use eTag data and surveillance cameras to monitor traffic flow in real time and adjust timing according to road conditions.
  • Three underpasses prone to collisions have been equipped with smart anti-collision warning systems, which combine image recognition with electronic display boards to prompt drivers to slow down.
  • Field measurements at the Yangde Road pilot site show that hard braking and evasive manoeuvres have both fallen by nearly 40%.

Outlook: The city government says it will continue to review other major commuter corridors and high-risk intersections, expanding the rollout of the same smart traffic equipment.
