New scheduling and permitting system for Oahu's ballparks and fields

Aug 25, 2026

Honolulu is standardizing how sports teams book public fields, which should help smaller and newer leagues get playing time but may squeeze groups used to holding the same slots.

  • The city's parks department is rolling out one island-wide field permitting system after testing it earlier this year.
  • Permits now run in two six-month blocks instead of by season, because youth sports run year-round.
  • Girls flag football and other newer sports have pushed demand past what the parks can handle.
  • When two groups want the same field, the city will sit them down in person to work out a split.
  • Pearl City has already run a similar setup and says sharing works better when everyone knows the schedule in advance.

Outlook: Three public Zoom sessions in early September will take questions, and the city says the rules will be adjusted after the 2026 season based on what people say.
