Lee Chen-hsiu Announces Run for Zhubei Mayor; Huang Kuo-chang Responds

Discord has emerged in the Taiwan People's Party's pre-election arrangements, as former legislator Lee Chen-hsiu presses ahead with a run for Zhubei mayor after being expelled from the party. Party chairman Huang Kuo-chang has played down the impact.

  • Lee Chen-hsiu announced her candidacy for mayor of Zhubei City in Hsinchu County. Huang Kuo-chang said that as long as it is lawful, running for office is a citizen's right, and declined to comment further.
  • Huang Kuo-chang stressed that this would not affect Chiu Chen-yuan, the TPP's nominee for Zhubei mayor.
  • The TPP took its mobile Central Committee meeting to Taichung, focusing on the central government's holding up of the city's construction funding and its approval of the MRT Blue and Orange lines.
  • Huang Kuo-chang criticised the more than 700 days it took to approve the Taichung MRT, compared with just over 40 days for Kaohsiung, saying Taichung residents are not second-class citizens.
  • On the party's next steps in Taichung, he said the key lies in KMT-TPP cooperation and joining forces with Lu Shiow-yen, with the immediate goal of getting its six city council candidates elected.

Outlook: Ahead of the year-end local elections, the TPP will keep pressing the central government over construction funding for Taichung, while seeking to limit the damage a split candidacy could do to its prospects in Zhubei.
