Taiwan cross-party delegation returns from APPU assembly in Tokyo with three proposals passed
Taiwan's legislature scored a modest diplomatic win in Tokyo, a positive for its efforts to stay visible in regional forums.
- A cross-party group of lawmakers led by Deputy Speaker Johnny Chiang returned from the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians' Union meeting in Japan.
- All three of Taiwan's proposals passed and were signed into a joint communiqué, covering resilient supply chains, food security, and ocean protection.
- APPU is one of the few international bodies Taiwan joins under its formal name, the Republic of China.
- The delegation met Japanese lawmakers from the newly renamed Japan-Taiwan friendship caucus and held talks with the Philippines, Guam, and its Pacific allies Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Palau.
Outlook: Expect Taiwan to keep leaning on parliamentary diplomacy to build regional ties as formal channels stay closed to it.
