Taiwan legislature to vote Thursday on rival drone spending bills
Taiwan's parties agree on buying more military drones but not on who controls the money, leaving a big defense program stuck in a fight the ruling party could lose.
- The vote was moved up to Thursday so lawmakers can go home and check flood damage in southern Taiwan, with another typhoon passing nearby.
- The government wants a special budget of about NT$210 billion through 2031, run by the Defense Ministry.
- The KMT wants slightly more money but spread through the normal budget with a yearly cap and the Economics Ministry in charge; the TPP wants both ministries involved and no cap.
- Defense Minister Wellington Koo says a yearly cap would not cover what the military needs, especially reconnaissance drones, attack drones and small suicide sea drones.
- The opposition argues drones go out of date fast, so buying in yearly batches makes more sense.
Outlook: With the opposition holding the numbers, a version that limits the Defense Ministry's control of the money looks likely to pass Thursday.
