Unimicron Raided Over Alleged Origin Laundering; ETFs Including 0050 and 006208 Affected
Taiwan's leading IC substrate maker Unimicron has been searched by prosecutors and investigators, sending its share price sharply lower and wiping out more than NT$100 billion in market value. It is bad news for retail investors holding the stock, but the impact on ETF investors is limited.
- Unimicron is suspected of relabelling products manufactured in China as "Made in Taiwan." The Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office has identified 14 people as suspected of offences including forgery of documents and false labelling of goods.
- ETFs such as 0050 and 006208 both hold Unimicron, but at a weighting of around 1.4% or less, giving an overall impact of under 1%. Actively managed ETFs with heavy positions, such as 00981A, hold more than 7% and face greater pressure.
- All four major U.S. indices fell on Friday, and Taiwan index futures dropped sharply in night trading. Institutional investors expect Taiwan's stock market could pull back 500 to 600 points on Monday.
- The United States is stepping up enforcement against the "red supply chain," and the grey area in which Taiwanese manufacturers once manoeuvred between the two sides of the Strait is disappearing.
- If U.S. customers shift orders elsewhere, Kinsus and Nan Ya PCB could be among the beneficiaries. Analysts suggest watching for opportunities to build positions in memory, PCB and other advanced-process stocks on pullbacks.
Outlook: Taiwan's market is likely to face selling pressure first on Monday, with SEMICON Taiwan opening on September 2 and the quarterly adjustment of 0050's constituent stocks as the next focal points.
