Chung Hsiao-ping registers his candidacy, warning that a KMT failure to win a majority could let a "white-green alliance" take the speakership

Aug 30, 2026

Taipei City Councillor Chung Hsiao-ping was the first to complete his candidacy registration, warning that if the Kuomintang fails to win a majority of seats in the city council, the pan-blue camp could lose control of the speakership — bad news for the pan-blue camp.

  • Chung said there are too many pan-blue and third-force candidates in the Zhongzheng-Wanhua constituency, splitting the vote and making the race easier for the Democratic Progressive Party.
  • The Taipei City Council has 61 seats, so a majority requires 31; he believes the KMT is in trouble if it fails to win 28 to 29 seats.
  • He is concerned that, once the Taiwan People's Party increases its seat count, the DPP will work with the TPP, ceding the speakership to the TPP while keeping the deputy speakership for itself.
  • He criticised Ko Wen-je as a "terrifying lover" and Huang Kuo-chang as a "gentle lover", saying Ko harbours a deep-seated dislike of the KMT, with the collapse of blue-white cooperation in Zhubei as an example.
  • He admitted he is under heavy pressure to win re-election, noting that he polled well last term but finished only seventh, and he urged supporters to consolidate their votes rather than engage in strategic vote-switching.

Outlook: Whether the blue and white camps can repair their cooperative relationship will determine who holds the Taipei City Council speakership and deputy speakership after the year-end elections.
