UH Mānoa Center for Oral History marks 50 years
Hawaii's main oral history archive is turning 50 and expanding its work across the islands, a positive story for communities trying to hold onto their own history.
- The University of Hawaii at Mānoa Center for Oral History has spent 50 years recording everyday people's stories from all the islands.
- New workshops and training sessions are planned on Maui, including Lahaina, with Hawaii Island next.
- The Lahaina fires pushed the center to focus on Maui, since older recordings show how people recovered from past disasters.
- A joint anniversary panel and a Korea exhibit with the National Park Service are also in the works.
- The center has set up an endowment and is asking the public to donate to keep the recordings going.
Outlook: Panels and community events are expected across the islands over the coming year, with more Maui and Hawaii Island recording work in the pipeline.
