Thousands of combat boots placed at Luke Field to honor fallen service members
Thousands of combat boots now cover Ford Island's Luke Field in Hawaii, a memorial display that gives grieving military families a place to find their loved ones' names.
- Each boot carries the year a service member died, laid out for the 2026 Boot Memorial Hero and Remnants Run.
- Teresa Johnson started the memorial in 2012 after a close friend of her children was killed in combat in 2007.
- The display began with 3,000 boots and has since tripled in size.
- Families searching the rows often break down when they finally find their person, relieved they have not been forgotten.
Outlook: The run starts Saturday morning, and the boots stay on display through September 12th.
