Three crashes kill two and injure two on Hawai'i Island
Two people died and two more were hurt in separate motorcycle crashes on the Big Island over the weekend, a grim stretch for local road safety.
- A man lost control of his motorcycle in Hilo early Saturday, hit a utility pole and was killed.
- He was the island's 23rd traffic death this year.
- Later that day in Kohala, a Tesla driver trying to pass several cars on Daniel K. Inouye Highway hit an oncoming motorcyclist.
- That rider then collided with a second motorcycle; one rider died at the scene and the other was flown to a hospital on Oahu.
- The Tesla driver had minor injuries and was arrested.
Outlook: Police investigations continue, and the driver arrested in the Kohala crash is likely to face charges.
