Cross-party Japanese lawmakers visit Taiwan to push a Japanese version of the Taiwan Relations Act
Seven Japanese lawmakers from across the political spectrum arrived in Taipei to promise stronger legal backing for Taiwan's defense, a positive signal for Taiwan and an unwelcome one for Beijing.
- The group plans to push laws in Japan modeled on the US Taiwan Relations Act and Taiwan Travel Act.
- Delegation leader Kitamura Haruo said peace in the Taiwan Strait matters to Japan and the whole region, and that Japan will do everything it can.
- The lawmakers come from several parties, including the Japan Innovation Party, the Democratic Party for the People, and the Conservative Party, showing broad support in Tokyo.
- Over three days they will meet Taiwan's presidential office, the legislature's foreign affairs and defense committee, and attend a Japan-Taiwan security forum.
- The stated goal is to work with Taiwan and the United States and send a clear message to any country trying to break the peace.
Outlook: Expect Japanese lawmakers to start drafting the bills after they return, and expect a sharp protest from Beijing.
