Crews work to clear and reopen damaged sections of Farrington Highway

Sep 08, 2026

Storm damage has shut down part of Farrington Highway on Oahu's west side, leaving thousands without power and making it hard to get in or out of the area.

  • Farrington Highway is still closed near Nanakuli, buried under sand and debris that stretches for miles toward Maili.
  • State crews with bulldozers and loaders are working to clear it, and a side road past the Nanakuli McDonald's is the only way around — local traffic only.
  • About 13,000 people from Makakilo through Waianae and Makaha, up to the North Shore, have no power, plus another 3,000 in Wahiawa.
  • Traffic lights in the area are dead because of the outage, and the fire department has been flying helicopters over the coast to check the damage.
  • The threat of flash floods and mudslides has not passed, with strong wind and sea spray still hitting the shoreline.

Outlook: Crews are pushing to reopen the highway quickly, but travel in and out of the west side will stay slow while cleanup and power repairs continue.
