Panama's Congress forms Taiwan friendship group with 45 lawmakers
A majority of Panama's lawmakers have signed on to a new pro-Taiwan caucus, a diplomatic win for Taipei in a country that switched recognition to Beijing in 2017.
- Panama's Congress launched a cross-party group for exchanges with Taiwan's legislature, with 45 members — over 60% of all lawmakers.
- The group is twice the size of Panama's pro-China caucus and one of the largest bodies in the chamber.
- It includes the Congress speaker, both deputy speakers, and the foreign affairs committee chair, spanning every major party.
- Taiwan's foreign minister Lin Chia-lung sent a video message, and more than 20 Panamanian lawmakers have visited Taiwan in the past six months.
- The US and Paraguay sent embassy representatives, and a US congressman who co-chairs the Congressional Taiwan Caucus also recorded a message.
Outlook: Expect more parliamentary exchanges between Taipei and Panama City, and pushback from Beijing, which counts Panama as a diplomatic partner.
