Honouliuli: A History Awakened
A benefit concert this weekend will mark 80 years since the closing of Honouliuli, Hawaii's largest World War II internment camp, in a positive push to keep that history alive for younger generations.
- Pacific Historic Parks is hosting the one-night show at Hawaii Theatre this Sunday, with doors at 3 p.m. and the performance at 4 p.m.
- Taiko master Kenny Endo, members of the Hawaii Symphony, and composer Jake Shimabukuro will perform, alongside poetry and other acts.
- A newly composed piece honors the "Go for Broke" generation of Japanese Americans who sacrificed so their children could have a better life.
- Organizers are pitching it as a family event, especially for kids, to learn a painful but important part of Hawaii's history.
Outlook: Tickets are on sale through Hawaii Theatre, and the event is expected to become a focal point for ongoing education about the camp.
