Belgian lawmakers visit Taiwan as both sides push to deepen ties
A Belgian parliamentary delegation is in Taiwan this week, a small but positive sign for Taipei as it works to build friends in Europe.
- Three members of Belgium's federal parliament, led by Kathleen Depoorter, met Taiwan's deputy foreign minister Wu Chih-chung to discuss chips, trade and investment, Europe-China relations, and hybrid security threats.
- Belgium wrote pro-Taiwan language into its government coalition deal last year and its lower house passed a pro-Taiwan resolution, which Taipei sees as a real show of support.
- Depoorter said Europe and Belgium are trying to find their footing in a shifting world order and that Taiwan has lessons to offer in several areas.
- The group will also meet Taiwan's National Security Council and think tanks, and tour defense industry sites in Taichung to study how Taiwan handles security, trade, and democratic resilience.
Outlook: Expect more of these European parliamentary visits as Taiwan leans on chip and security cooperation to strengthen ties with EU countries despite pressure from Beijing.
