Chinese fishing boat seized for illegal trawling near Penghu
Taiwan's coast guard caught a Chinese boat fishing illegally in its waters, a small but pointed reminder of the friction between Taipei and Beijing.
- A Chinese fishing boat with no name on its hull was trawling inside Taiwan's waters near Penghu's Mudou Islet.
- The boat refused orders to stop, sped up and zigzagged to dodge inspection, so the coast guard chased it down in small craft.
- The crew dumped its entire catch — 400 kilos — overboard before being boarded.
- Six crew members and the boat were escorted back to Magong port and will be penalized under Taiwan's cross-strait relations law.
Outlook: Taiwan is keeping coast guard patrols heavy through the holiday period, and these border run-ins are likely to keep happening.
