US ambassador to China says Taiwan policy unchanged after Trump-Xi meeting
Washington is holding its line on Taiwan after the Trump-Xi White House meeting, a neutral-to-reassuring signal for Taipei but no shift in either direction.
- US ambassador to China David Perdue said Trump's Taiwan policy has not changed, despite Chinese pressure to change it.
- Washington still backs the one-China policy, the Taiwan Relations Act, the three communiqués and the six assurances — it wants peace in the Taiwan Strait, opposes coercion, and does not support independence.
- Xi pressed Trump to oppose Taiwanese independence and handle the Taiwan question carefully; the White House has not released its own account of the talks.
- Washington also told Beijing that any help to Iran — intelligence, parts or military gear — is unacceptable, and says that issue is kept separate from Taiwan.
- China is the biggest buyer of Iranian oil, which gives the warning real weight as the Iran war drags on.
Outlook: Expect more of the same language on Taiwan while the real friction shifts to China's support for Iran.
