A brush fire in Olowalu Village on West Maui has forced evacuations and a highway closure, a serious and fast-moving threat to residents in the area.

• The fire started early afternoon, and warning sirens sounded shortly after.
• Residents between Lui Street and Eheene Street have been told to leave, with officials calling the fire an immediate danger to people and property.
• Honoapiilani Highway is shut between North Kihei and the Olowalu General Store, so drivers need other routes.
• Two gathering points are open, at the Lahaina Civic Center and South Maui Community Park in Kihei, but they are not full shelters, so people should bring bedding, food, water, and medication.
• Pets are allowed at the gathering points but must stay in crates.

Outlook: The situation is still unfolding, and the evacuation zone could widen if the fire keeps spreading.
