Maui brush fire in Olowalu forces evacuations
A fast-moving brush fire above Olowalu on Maui has burned 300 acres and pushed people out of their homes, though no houses have burned and no one has been hurt.
- The fire is 40% contained, with ground crews working through the night and helicopters dropping water until dark.
- Roads between West Maui and Central Maui are closed, and two shelters are open for people cut off on either side.
- Power was deliberately shut off in the area so firefighters could work safely, leaving part of the coast in the dark.
- Winds gusting over 70 mph are driving the flames, but crews are steering the fire downhill toward the ocean so it runs out of anything to burn.
- Clearing 42 acres of junk cars, tires, and dry brush near mile marker 18.5 last year is credited with keeping this fire smaller than it could have been.
Outlook: Crews expect to hold the line overnight, with evacuation orders and power staying off until the fire is declared safe.
