Taiwan names new ambassador to Eswatini and Boston office head

Sep 26, 2026

Taiwan is reshuffling its diplomatic posts, a routine but telling move that keeps its focus on holding onto one of its few remaining allies in Africa.

  • Tsui Ching-lin, currently the number two at Taiwan's embassy in Eswatini, is being promoted to ambassador there.
  • Kuan Yu-chun, a deputy at the foreign ministry's parliamentary affairs office, takes over as head of Taiwan's Boston office.
  • The Eswatini job matters because it is one of the last African countries that still recognizes Taiwan over China.
  • Tsui will keep pushing two flagship projects: a Taiwan-backed industrial park and strategic oil storage tanks in Eswatini.
  • The previous ambassador left in July after eight years, having hosted a state visit by President Lai Ching-te.

Outlook: Expect Taiwan to keep pouring money and technical help into Eswatini across energy, industry, health, and farming to stop Beijing from peeling the ally away.
