Taiwan's foreign minister leads business delegation to Belize and Guatemala
Taiwan is pushing to shore up two of its few remaining diplomatic allies with a mix of state visits and business deals, a modest win for Taipei as China keeps peeling away its partners.
- Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is in Belize and Guatemala to meet both countries' leaders, including Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo.
- A 30-strong business delegation is along for the trip, covering green energy, AI and space tech, biotech, healthcare, tourism and finance.
- The visit marks 92 years of Taiwan-Guatemala ties, with joint projects on display: a hospital build in Belize, social housing, an airport emergency control centre in Guatemala City.
- US business groups were invited to join, an attempt to link Taiwanese, American and allied-country firms into one commercial bloc.
Outlook: Expect more deal-making trips like this as Taipei tries to make its remaining alliances economically sticky enough to resist Beijing's pressure.
