Maui wildfire in Olowalu forces evacuations
A brush fire in West Maui burned more than 100 acres and forced people from their homes, but no houses were lost and nobody was hurt.
- The fire broke out Saturday afternoon in Olowalu and is now 70% contained.
- Sirens sounded and police went door to door telling residents to leave; shelters opened in Lahaina and South Maui.
- Strong wind was the biggest danger and kept helicopters from dropping water, so crews fought the fire from the ground.
- The wind shifted away from Lahaina overnight, which spared homes there.
- Hawaiian Electric cut power to lines in the area, a change from what happened in 2023.
Outlook: Crews expect to finish containing the fire, though wind remains the main risk.
