Hawaiʻi's jazz tradition and an October concert in Honolulu
Hawaiian History Month is putting a spotlight on the islands' jazz scene, good news for local music fans and the musicians keeping the style alive.
- Jazz has deep roots in Hawaiʻi, with local players mixing it with ragtime and Hawaiian music back in the 1920s.
- Singer Karen Kaʻuhane and drummer Noa Okimoto are bringing back their Ohana Jazz Hawaiʻi show on October 11 at the Moiliili Community Center, early evening.
- The first show sold out and ended in a standing ovation, so this one is back by popular demand.
- The band features Tommy James on piano, Dean Taba on bass, and Alan Juan on saxophone — all regulars on the Honolulu club circuit.
- Tickets are sold at a clothing shop downstairs from the venue, and parking is free.
Outlook: Expect a full house again, and more shows if demand holds.
