Israeli ministers push to extend Gaza tactics to the West Bank
Israel's finance minister has openly called for a Gaza-style military campaign in the West Bank and the annexation of most of it, a dangerous turn for Palestinians there and for any hope of a lasting ceasefire.
- Bezalel Smotrich said Israel should "go to war" in the West Bank and dismantle the Palestinian Authority, which he calls a terror body.
- He also wants to annex 80% of the West Bank, keep the 60% of Gaza already held, and take southern Lebanon up to the Litani River.
- More than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the war began, a quarter of them children, by soldiers and armed settlers.
- Smotrich has already squeezed the Palestinian Authority's finances to near collapse by cutting it off from Israeli money transfers.
- Newly updated satellite imagery shows nearly every building in Gaza flattened or left unlivable, while reporters are still blocked from entering.
Outlook: Israel's coming election will show whether voters reward this platform, and a Netanyahu-led coalition with Smotrich and Ben Gvir would likely push annexation forward.
