Taiwan's Chicago envoy on US support and UN participation

Sep 28, 2026

Taiwan says international backing has grown stronger after the latest Trump-Xi meeting, a positive signal for Taipei and a setback for Beijing's pressure campaign.

  • Taiwan's top official in Chicago said Washington's Taiwan policy has not changed, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirming it after the leaders met.
  • Foreign ministers from the US, Japan, South Korea, Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand, Poland and the UK all backed peace in the Taiwan Strait and opposed any one-sided change to the status quo.
  • More than 60 US lawmakers from both parties also spoke up for Taiwan.
  • Taipei says China is the real threat to regional peace, pointing to constant military pressure around Taiwan and in the East and South China Seas.
  • Taiwan wants a seat at the UN and says China is twisting a decades-old UN resolution to shut it out, a misuse the US criticized at the Security Council for the first time in 2025.

Outlook: Taiwan will keep pushing for UN participation and deeper AI and tech cooperation with the US, while China keeps up the pressure.
