Aloha and support for the Viveiros ʻohana after a fatal New Mexico crash
Two Hawaii families are leaning on community help after a deadly highway crash and a kitchen fire, while Medicare members and future college students face new paperwork deadlines.
- Wayne and Luana Viveiros and their 22-year-old daughter Lilinoʻe, an Oahu North Shore family known for hula, were killed Sunday when a commercial truck crossed the median on I-40 in New Mexico and hit their car.
- Lilinoʻe had just graduated from University of Hawaii West Oahu and was about to start teaching; a GoFundMe is collecting donations for the family.
- Leeward Drive-In in Waipahu, a local favorite for more than 60 years, is closed after a fire badly damaged its kitchen last Friday — no one was hurt, and a fundraiser is underway to reopen it.
- About 16,000 HMSA Medicare Advantage members must pick a new plan because two plans end December 31; open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, and anyone who does nothing defaults to original Medicare.
- The University of Hawaii launched Apply Hawaii, a single undergraduate application covering all 10 campuses, now open for fall 2027 applicants.
Outlook: Donations will decide how fast the Viveiros family and Leeward Drive-In recover, and HMSA members have a hard December 7 deadline to act.
