Taiwan stocks surge 1,236 points to record high as UMC sells off
Taiwan's stock market blasted to an all-time high on the back of TSMC, great news for most investors, but UMC shareholders got crushed on the same day.
- The main index jumped 1,236 points to close at a record, within reach of the 50,000 mark, with night futures already pushing past it.
- TSMC led the charge to a record close, and foreign buyers poured in over NT$70 billion, one of the biggest single-day buying sprees ever.
- UMC was the day's big loser, falling over 5% as foreign and local institutions dumped more than 120,000 lots between them, cutting institutional ownership sharply.
- Chip and board-related names like MediaTek, PCB and CCL makers led the rally, while a weak US September jobs report lifted hopes the Fed will hold off on rate hikes.
- China Steel is raising prices on five products in November as steel demand and costs pick up.
Outlook: Taiwan's index looks likely to clear 50,000 this week, though chasing the rally here carries real risk of a pullback.
