New Introductory Book on Taiwan Strait Defense Wargaming Launched; Scholar Hopes to Build Youth Awareness of National Defense

National Defense University professor Ma Chen-kun has published "An Introduction to Taiwan Strait Defense Wargaming," hoping to turn Taiwan Strait defense operations into a textbook that young people can understand — a positive development for raising public awareness of national defense.

  • The "Taiwan Strait Defense Wargame," organized last June by the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science Foundation and other bodies, continued to be discussed in the media and in society for more than a month after it ended, a level of attention that is quite rare for a civilian wargame.
  • Interest in Taiwan Strait security among the younger generation has risen markedly, with student clubs running their own wargames and related games appearing online, but online information is fragmented and lacks context.
  • The new book aims to fill that gap, offering complete and systematic knowledge of national defense and security in accessible terms.
  • Huang Chieh-cheng noted that without data, weapons parameters, deployment practices and exercise subjects, a wargame becomes pure guesswork, which is why a foundation has to be built up over time.
  • Pu Tse-chun said that wargames grounded in reality require funding, which is also why complete books on wargaming are rarely found on the market.

Outlook: The organizations involved plan to continue holding wargames, and hope the book will serve as an introductory reference for students and government agencies.
