US House delegation visits Taiwan ahead of National Day
A three-member US congressional delegation is in Taiwan to show support for the island, a boost for Taipei as China keeps up military pressure.
- Brendan Boyle, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee, led the trip and said the goal was to show clear backing for a democratic Taiwan.
- Taiwan's foreign minister hosted the group and tied the visit to pressure from China that threatens regional peace, not just Taiwan.
- Taiwan is building up its own defenses and working with the US and other partners to strengthen deterrence along the first island chain.
- Trade was also on the table, with Taipei pushing Congress to fix double taxation between the two sides to unlock more two-way investment.
- Taiwan pointed to its new office in Phoenix as proof the relationship now runs through chips and economic security, not just diplomacy.
Outlook: The delegation meets President Lai Ching-te and other senior officials before leaving, with the double-taxation fix the main thing Taipei wants from Washington next.
