Union Plaza standoff draws large police response during medical call
A landlord-tenant fight at a downtown Honolulu apartment building has turned hostile enough that police had to guard paramedics, which is bad news for the handful of residents still living there.
- Dozens of HPD officers lined Bishop Street Monday morning to escort firefighters and EMS to a person on the top floor of the nine-story Union Plaza.
- Some residents apparently threw things at officers when they showed up.
- The building's owner wants to clear out tenants and turn the place into student housing.
- Power and water have been shut off repeatedly over the past year, and trash is piling up in the alley behind the building.
- About 25 people are still holding out in the building.
Outlook: With eviction efforts and utility shutoffs continuing, more confrontations at the building look likely.
